Congratulations to Torino, Italy on being selected to host the 2006 games.

The host city of the XX Olympic Winter Games in 2006 was selected during the 109th IOC Session in Seoul. The election of Turin was a historic event for the IOC who created a Selection College to narrow the list of six Candidate Cities to two finalists. Sion and Torino then went before the full IOC membership for the final vote.

The bids submitted to the IOC were:

  • Sion, Switzerland
  • Torino, Italy
  • Zakopane, Poland
  • Poprad-Tatry, Slovakia
  • Helsinki, Finland and Lillehammer, Norway (joint bid)
  • Klagenfurt, Austria, in a three-country bid with regions of Slovenia and Italy.
